Young Adult Cancer Canada
Background
Many people see young adults (15-39 years) as “too young to have cancer”, resulting in a massive lack of funding, research and support for the unique issues they face. With over 3,000 members Canada-wide, Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) is a non-profit that provides support to young adults in all stages, from diagnosis to treatment and beyond, and connects them to peers who are uniquely able to understand their struggles.
The Ask
Position Young Adult Cancer Canada as the #1 resource for every young adult diagnosed with cancer across the country, with the objectives of educating the public to change perceptions of the unique issues facing young adults with cancer, and raising awareness of YACC to increase new connections.
The Result
This award-winning campaign garnered the Award of Excellence from the 2020 IABC Ovation awards in the non-profit category. BlueSky developed a national and regional media relations campaign to leverage YAC Prime study findings to educate and show that young adults with cancer have unique issues, and therefore need support and resources specifically for the demographic. As a bridge to demonstrate YACC’s national support, the campaign was built around personal survival stories as an effective way to inspire action. Media coverage was secured in 234 media outlets across Canada, including 55 broadcast opportunities, with 17 national airings on CTV Toronto and Global News Calgary. Total media reach was 68,108,391, while new YACC connections increased by 44 per cent due to the campaign.
