November is Diabetes Awareness Month and this year marks the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin by Canadian scientists. To help spread awareness, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society has partnered with Diabetes Canada to highlight the importance of regular eye care for preventing vision loss. People living with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy (DR), and it’s one of the leading causes of blindness among Canadians. Dr. Colin Mann, President of COS, spoke to CBC Radio to discuss the causes and risk factors of DR, and ways people living with diabetes can help to avoid it.
